It started because the chandelier looked like it was dying

Back in March, our facilities manager flagged the crystal chandelier in our main lobby. Half the bulbs were out, and the fixture was doing this flickering thing—like a slow blink, then nothing, then a slow blink again. Clients walk through that lobby every day. It wasn't a great look.

I'm the office administrator. I handle the building services budget—roughly $180,000 a year across about 14 vendors, everything from janitorial to copier leases. Lighting is normally not mine. But our usual electrician had just gone on a two-month sabbatical, the facilities manager was buried in a roof repair, and the chandelier deadline (a client event in early April) was creeping up. So it landed on my desk.

Here's the thing: I knew how to buy printer toner. I did not know what the parts of a light fixture were called, let alone how to spec a replacement power supply for one.

The first wrong turn (and the second)

My first move was predictable. I called the building's electrical contractor and asked them to "just fix the chandelier." They sent a junior tech who poked around for twenty minutes, came down the ladder, and said two words that meant nothing to me at the time: bad driver.

"The driver's shot," he said. "It's a constant-voltage one. You need a 12-volt, 10-amp replacement. Any electrical supply house can hook you up."

So I did what any reasonable person would do: I googled it. And I got lost immediately. Because if you search "LED fixture power supply" you get hit with constant voltage versus constant current, dimming protocols, IP ratings, and about nine thousand listings on Amazon that all look identical.

I bought the wrong one first. Cheapest option, around $22 (this was back in March 2025—I'd have to check current pricing). It arrived two days later. The electrician installed it. It powered the fixture for about forty minutes and then died with an audible pop. That's when the tech gently explained that I'd bought a constant-current driver, and the chandelier needed constant voltage. That distinction matters. Constant voltage (meaning the driver holds voltage steady and lets the current vary) is what most low-voltage lighting needs. Constant current does the opposite—it holds current steady and lets voltage float. Swap them by mistake and you cook something.

That $22 and forty minutes of embarrassed troubleshooting cost our department more in time than the correct part would have cost me twice over.

Meanwhile, the exit signs

Because I apparently enjoy compounding my own problems, I'd also taken on a side project the same month: replacing four burned-out exit signs in our west corridor. That one I felt more confident about. Exit signs are exit signs, right?

Not quite. Our building inspector had flagged that two of the four were older than ten years and had never had their backup batteries verified. Under NFPA 101 (the Life Safety Code that most US jurisdictions adopt in some form), exit signs have to run for at least 90 minutes on backup power during an outage. Ours hadn't been load-tested in years. So what I thought was a cosmetic replacement turned into a compliance issue.

I mention this because the same week I was trying to figure out the chandelier, I was also reading UL 924 spec sheets. (Note to self: never schedule two facility projects for the same two weeks again.)

The turn—when the electrician said two words I hadn't heard before

The senior electrician finally came back on-site to look at the chandelier issue. He pulled the dead driver out of the fixture, turned it over, and pointed at the label. Mean Well.

"Whoever installed this originally knew what they were doing," he said. "These last. Just get the same thing in a 12-volt 10-amp. Look at the LRS or LPV series."

I'd love to tell you I nodded knowingly. I did not.

What I actually did was spend a full evening reading Mean Well's product lines, which is how I learned a few things worth sharing:

  • Model numbers encode specs. LRS-120-12 means the LRS series, ~120 watts, 12-volt output. That's roughly the 12V/10A job the chandelier needed. The trailing number is the voltage; the middle is wattage.
  • Enclosed vs. open-frame matters for where you're mounting it. An open-frame supply inside a decorative fixture is fine if the fixture itself is enclosed. A DIN-rail unit is for control panels.
  • "Mean Well LED drivers" isn't one thing. Their dimmable line (like the PWM, or the 3-in-1 dimming models where you can drive dimming via resistor, PWM signal, or analog voltage) is a different product category from their general-purpose AC/DC supplies. I did not know this at the time. I do now.

I ended up ordering a Mean Well LRS-120-12 replacement. The senior electrician installed it in about fifteen minutes. It worked. The chandelier has run cleanly since—it's now been roughly four months, which is admittedly not a long track record, so take that for what it's worth.

What I actually learned (and would tell the next admin who gets handed this)

Three things stick with me.

First, the parts-of-a-fixture vocabulary is worth ten minutes of your life. Before this project I couldn't have told you the difference between a housing, a canopy, a socket, a driver, and a diffuser. Now I can, and it's made every subsequent lighting conversation shorter. If you're about to talk to an electrician, look up the diagram once. When they say "the canopy's fine but the driver's giving me fits," you won't be paying them to explain it.

Second, brand consistency actually matters for power supplies. I'm not saying you should only ever buy one brand—I'm saying that when the original installer used Mean Well in a fixture that ran for what I'd estimate was 7–8 years (I'm guessing based on the install tag, which was faded), that's a signal. I should add that I've since used Mean Well drivers on two other small projects—a hallway retrofit and a signage upgrade—and they've been fine. That said, we've only used them in low-load, non-critical applications so far. Ask me again in three years.

Third, you can't shortcut compliance. The exit sign mess was a self-inflicted reminder that anything with a backup battery and a UL 924 listing is not something to buy on price alone. I now have a single spreadsheet tracking our emergency lighting inventory—install dates, battery test dates, and model numbers. It took an afternoon to build and has already saved me a repeat of that panic.

When I took over vendor management in 2020, I thought the job was about getting the right price and the right invoice. It's not. It's about knowing enough vocabulary to ask the right question before you place the order. A $22 power supply that dies in forty minutes is not a bargain. A $45 one that doesn't is.

Look, if someone out there has a better framework for evaluating LED drivers for retrofit work, I'd genuinely like to hear it. I'm still figuring this out.
