I've handled power supply orders for a lighting integration company since 2021, and in that time I've personally made — and documented — 12 significant mistakes that totaled roughly $3,100 in wasted budget. This checklist is what I hand to new project managers now, so they don't repeat my errors.
Use it when you're about to spec a MEAN WELL power supply for an LED lighting project, whether that's a single clear chandelier in a restaurant or a batch of DIN rail units for a control cabinet. It's six steps, and step 3 is the one almost everyone skips.
Step 1: Measure the Actual Load Voltage, Not the Label Voltage
My first mistake happened in May 2021. I ordered 40 LRS-150-24 switching power supplies for a 24V LED strip retrofit. The strip labels said 24V, so I didn't check anything else. Once everything was wired, about a third of the strips flickered badly. Turns out those "24V" strips had a forward voltage of 23.2V at the current we were driving, and we were right at the edge of the LRS-150-24's voltage adjustment range.
The fix: measure the actual operating voltage with a multimeter before you order, then check the datasheet's voltage adjustment range. I now write the measured value on every project spec. It takes five minutes and prevents an entire category of problems.
Step 2: Match the Series to the Environment
The first MEAN WELL switching power supply that shows up in a search isn't necessarily the right one. The series matters more than the wattage:
- LRS series — enclosed switching power supplies. Solid for general AC/DC conversion, but not made for outdoor or high-humidity spaces.
- HDR series — ultra-slim DIN rail power supplies. Good for electrical cabinets where space is tight.
- LPC series — constant current LED drivers. This is what I recommend for most LED lighting loads, especially for chandelier companies that need stable current for LED modules.
I once suggested the LRS-100-24 to a client for a project that actually needed constant current for a row of LED modules. The modules drew varying current as they heated up, and the supply kept cycling into protection mode. We swapped it out for the correct LPC driver (which, thankfully, was in stock) and the issue disappeared.
Step 3: Verify the 3-in-1 Dimming Range Before You Order
MEAN WELL LED drivers with 3-in-1 dimming (resistor/PWM/voltage) are a big selling point — and for good reason. But the usable dimming range is not identical across models. Some drop to 5% output; others only go to 10%.
This is the step people skip. I was working with a design firm on a clear chandelier installation in a boutique hotel. The client wanted candle-level dimming for the evening atmosphere. The driver we had selected was dimmable, but it only dimmed to 20%. We had to replace all 12 drivers with a different series — about $600 in extra cost and a two-week delay.
Before you order, check the datasheet for the exact dimming range. If your project requires deep dimming, look for "dimming range" in the output section, and don't assume it's written in large print.
Step 4: Calculate Thermal Derating (The Numbers Aren't the Whole Story)
In September 2022, I had to source power supplies for high-output LED fixtures in an outdoor enclosure in Arizona. The load calculation said we needed only 60% of the rated capacity, and the data said any standard model would work. My gut said otherwise.
I checked the derating curves anyway. At the predicted enclosure temperature of 65°C, the LRS-150-24 declines to roughly 70% of its rated output. That meant our "safe" 60% load was actually right at the limit — with no margin if the enclosure got hotter than expected on a 110°F afternoon. I chose a higher-wattage model and added venting. That summer, we had zero failures.
If your installation runs warm (sealed cabinets, direct sunlight, crowded junction boxes), look at the derating graph in the datasheet. It shows how much output drops as temperature climbs. Nobody wants to learn this after the drivers are already mounted in the ceiling.
Step 5: Read the Wiring Diagram Twice
I documented this mistake in March 2023. We ordered 60 HDR-60-24 DIN rail units for a building automation job. I wired the first sample myself, went from memory instead of the datasheet, and mixed up the AC input terminals. It took about three seconds to ruin a brand-new unit — and I was lucky it didn't short anything.
Pull the PDF datasheet from the official MEAN WELL site and zoom in before you connect anything. The printed diagram on the unit is small and easy to misread in bad lighting. This sounds embarrassingly simple, but it's the kind of mistake that happens under deadline pressure (ugh, again).
Step 6: Order Spares and Confirm Accessories
On any project with 20 or more drivers, order at least two spare units. I've watched projects stall for a week because a single unit failed during commissioning and the distributor needed to restock. $230 for international overnight shipping (unfortunately) isn't unusual when you're chasing a back-ordered part.
It's also worth verifying mounting requirements. MEAN WELL supplies don't always include every bracket you might need, and that catches people off guard.
What I Recommend (and What I Don't)
To be honest, the LRS series is the workhorse I recommend for most constant-voltage needs. The HDR is my pick for control cabinets. And the LPC is what I use for LED module and chandelier projects.
What I don't recommend is treating any power supply as a universal solution. No brand — MEAN WELL included — makes one driver that works for every fixture. Retrofits vary too much.
One recurring question from hospitality clients: "can monstera grow in low light?" That's a plant question, not a power supply question, but it comes up for a reason. A monstera won't thrive in near darkness, but it can survive in low light — and in a restaurant, that "low light" ambiance comes from deep-dimming the LED fixtures. Which means the driver needs to dim smoothly without flicker. If you have a clear chandelier above the monstera, the same dimming requirement applies: pick a driver with a wide range and verify it.
Final Notes
If you're building 500W+ industrial systems, this checklist isn't for you. MEAN WELL's industrial product lines have different selection logic: power factor correction, inrush current, redundancy — that's outside the scope of what I'm covering here.
For the rest of us: follow the six steps and verify the specs on paper instead of trusting memory. It's not glamorous, but it works. Trust me on this one.
