Mean Well drivers are typically constant current (like the LPC series) or constant voltage (like the LRS series). Mixing them up is a classic error.
Checklist item: Write down the exact voltage requirement (e.g., 24V DC) and the exact current requirement (e.g., 1.5A) for your load. Do not just multiply unit wattage by quantity. Verify. Use the Mean Well datasheet for derating curves at expected operating temperature (note to self: derating at 50°C is real — check the fine print).
Step 2: Check the Dimming Compatibility — 3-in-1 Is Not Automatic
This is the step most people skip. Mean Well offers a "3-in-1 dimming" feature on many drivers (resistor/PWM/voltage). But 'dimmable' does not mean 'dimmable with your specific controller.'
Checklist item: Do not assume 3-in-1 works out of the box. Check the dimming range for your PWM frequency or resistor value. For example, the Mean Well LPC-60-700 is a constant current driver. It is not dimmable at all. To get dimming, you need a different series like the LDD or the HLG series. Verify with your dimmer's spec sheet. Simples.
(Insider knowledge: What most people don't realize is that the '3-in-1' feature often requires an external controller, and the resistor range has a specific min and max. Use a resistor outside that range, and you get flicker or no dimming.)
Step 3: Verify the Physical Form Factor and Mounting
Mean Well power supplies come in various form factors: enclosed (like the LRS series), DIN rail (like the HDR series), and waterproof (like the HLG series). The HDR-60-24, for example, is a DIN rail power supply. It is perfect for control cabinets.
Checklist item: Measure the physical space. Do not assume it fits. I once ordered a LRS-150-24 for a tight channel on a nautical chandelier project, thinking it was the same footprint as a smaller unit. It was not. I had to cut a new hole in the fixture — not ideal.
Step 4: Verify the Certification and Compliance
This step saves you from compliance rejections. It's a hidden cost that shows up when the inspector says the unit doesn't have the right mark for the country. Mean Well units typically carry UL, CE, and ENEC certifications, but specific models may not have all.

Counterfeit power supplies are a real problem in the industry. A fake Mean Well unit may have the same label but different internal components, different output, and no safety certification. It can fail within months — or worse, cause a fire.
Checklist item: Use the official mean well power supply distributor locator on the Mean Well website. Cross-check the distributor's stock against the manufacturer's list of authorized partners. If the price is too good — way below market — ask for the batch code and verify it. I've seen a project where 47 units were fake. The cost of replacement plus rework was $3,200. Common Mistakes to Watch For

- Assuming 'standard' means 'same as last time': In Q1 2024, I ordered a unit we had used for two years. The model number was the same. The internal revision had changed, and the pinout was slightly different. The wiring connected wrong. Check the datasheet revision before every order.
