I manage purchasing and maintenance vendor relationships for a 400-person company across three locations. In my world, a troubling light fixture is not usually a design statement. But in 2024, it was. We had just finished our headquarters lobby with a Schonbek chandelier in the entrance and an organic chandelier in the seating area. Both looked incredible. Then the flickering started.

At first, it was subtle. A few weeks later, the organic chandelier was pulsing whenever the dimmer went below 50%. That is the moment I almost made an expensive mistake.

After five years of managing vendor relationships, I thought I understood how to source replacement parts fast. I started the same way I start most lighting issues: I assumed the power supply was bad. Our building runs almost entirely on Mean Well power supplies. The LRS-150-24 units feed our signs, the HDR-60-24 keeps our control cabinet powered, and for custom LED fixtures, a Mean Well driver with the correct current is usually my first choice. The Surface Problem Was the Wrong Place to Start

A flickering Schonbek chandelier feels like a premium component failure. When a beautiful fixture starts misbehaving, the natural instinct is to replace the expensive part. But an LED driver does not work on its own. It is part of an input circuit, an output circuit, and a dimming control circuit. If any one of those is wrong, a reliable Mean Well driver will behave exactly like a defective one.

The Layer Underneath: Wiring, Not Components

Our electrician found the deeper cause with a multimeter. The chandelier was connected to a circuit with a shared neutral, and the neutral connection in the ceiling box was loose. Under load, that loose connection added resistance, which caused the voltage at the driver to drop. The driver kept browning out and the fixture flickered. When the circuit was not under load, the multimeter still read around 120V. So a simple voltage test at the wall switch told us nothing.

Here is the uncomfortable part. I had already chosen a replacement Mean Well driver that was electrically compatible with the fixture. If I had approved that purchase, the new driver would have done the same thing. The old driver was not the failing piece. The circuit feeding it did not have a stable connection. That is a problem no power supply can fix.

I also learned why Mean Well's 3-in-1 dimming capability is a feature, not a shortcut. That feature gives you resistor, PWM, or voltage dimming control, but the control wiring still has to match the rest of the system. A driver is only as good as the wiring and controls connected to it.

The Price of Ordering Before Testing

The quote I almost approved was for two driver replacements, about $430 plus $80 in rush shipping. The after-hours electrician call would have added a few hundred more. Total, we would have spent well over $700 to keep the flicker. The actual repair was simple. The electrician cleaned and tightened the neutral connections in the junction box, replaced an old wire connector, and measured the voltage again under load. The total cost was a service call and a few dollars of parts.

We did not have a formal process for checking the wiring before ordering a replacement driver. That was our real process gap. It is also why I created a one-page checklist for LED fixture failures. The checklist starts with the name of the person who tested the wiring and the multimeter readings. No part number gets approved until that line is filled in.

How to Test Ceiling Light Wiring With a Multimeter

I am an administrator, not an electrician. I do not want anyone to attempt live electrical work based on an article. But understanding the process changed how I approve repair work. If you are comfortable with a multimeter and the work is legal where you are, this is the sequence that would have caught our problem sooner.

  1. Turn off the breaker and verify the circuit is dead. Lock or tag the panel so someone else does not turn it back on while you are working. A non-contact voltage tester is a useful first check, but a multimeter set to volts is better.
  2. Map the wires before changing anything. Separate the wires and identify which cable comes from the switch, which cable feeds other lights, and where the neutral and ground are. In older buildings, wire color is not a guarantee. A white wire can be a hot wire in a switch loop.
  3. Look for missing wires. Many modern dimmable drivers need a neutral. If the ceiling box has no neutral or no ground, stop and get an electrician to review the installation before you spend money on a new driver.
  4. Measure voltage at the connection point. With the breaker on, and the wires carefully separated, measure from hot to neutral and hot to ground. You should see close to the supply voltage, normally about 120V in North America if this is a standard lighting circuit.
  5. Measure again under load. This step is what found our issue. Reconnect the fixture, turn the dimmer on, and watch the voltage at the driver input. If the voltage sags when the fixture draws current, you have a supply-side or connection problem. A new Mean Well driver will still flicker on that circuit.
You can do all of the safety checks with the power off. The voltage reading under load requires live power. If you are not trained to work around live voltage, stop at the mapping step and hire a licensed electrician.

A Better Rule: Trust the Specialist Who Knows Their Limits

A supplier who tells you to call an electrician before buying a driver might sound like they are losing a sale. In my experience, the opposite is true. The vendor who said we should verify the input wiring before spending money earned my trust for every future order. I would rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who promises that a part will fix everything.

So if a fixture with an LED driver starts flashing, do not start by ordering hardware. Start by testing the ceiling wiring. You do not have to become an electrician, but you should know who has actually taken a multimeter reading at the junction box. That small habit is what caught our wiring issue before a good power supply took the blame.
