If you're reading this because you're building a balloon chandelier or a wicker chandelier with LED strips, and you're staring at a list of Mean Well power supplies – stop. I've been there. And I've made the mistakes so you don't have to. Over the last four years, I've personally managed about 200 custom lighting orders, from small accent strips to full ceiling installations. And I've wasted roughly $1,200 due to wrong drivers, bad cuts, and ignored specs. So here are the questions I get asked most – plus one you didn't know you needed.
1. What Mean Well model should I use for a 24V 5A LED strip project?
Short answer: the Mean Well LRS-150-24 or the HLG-120H-24. Long answer: it depends on whether you need dimming and whether you're mounting it inside a chandelier.
The LRS-150-24 is a workhorse – 24V, 6.5A actually (that's 156W), so it handles 5A easily with headroom. But it's not dimmable. If you need dimming (and most chandeliers do nowadays), look at the HLG-120H-24 or the PWM-120-24. Both offer 3-in-1 dimming (resistor/PWM/voltage).
Note to self: I once ordered the non-dimmable version for a dimmable fixture. Replacing it cost $60 and a two-day delay.
2. Can I use the Mean Well MBLU40W driver for a balloon chandelier?
Technically yes, but probably not the way you're thinking. The MBLU40W is a constant-current (0.7A max) driver with a voltage range of 21–42V. It was designed for high-power LEDs (e.g., single COBs), not for LED strips.
Balloon chandeliers almost always use constant-voltage strips (24V). So unless your balloon chandelier uses a specific constant-current LED array (rare), you'd need a constant-voltage driver like the LPC-60-24 or the PFC-40-24 instead.
The mistake I made: I assumed all Mean Well drivers worked with LED strips. I bought two MBLU40Ws, cut three strips, connected them – nothing. Cost: $80 flushed.
3. Where do I cut LED light strips (and where NOT to cut)?
Most 24V LED strips have cut marks every 1 inch or 2 inches. You'd think it's obvious: cut at the marked line. But I've seen people cut right through the copper pads, and then wonder why half the strip is dead.
Here's the rule: look for the shiny copper pads (usually two or four). The cut line is between them, never across the copper. Use sharp scissors. Cut exactly along the dashed line.
Quick tip: if you're cutting for a wicker chandelier with tight curves, measure twice. I once cut a 5m strip into 15 pieces and had to re-order because I cut 1cm too short on the last piece. That's $65 down the drain (plus shipping wait).
4. Why is my dimmable LED setup flickering?
Flickering after dimming is the #1 complaint I hear. And 90% of the time it's because the dimming method doesn't match the driver.
Mean Well's 3-in-1 dimming uses three different signals: resistor (0–10V pots), PWM (from smart controllers), or DC voltage (0–10V). If you use a simple resistor dimmer expecting it to work as PWM, you'll get flicker.
Another common cause: your LED strip's total wattage is too low for the driver's minimum load. Yes, drivers have a minimum load. The HLG-120H-24 requires at least 10% load (12W). If your chandelier only uses 8W of strip, the driver will oscillate.
What I learned the hard way: I had a 6W wicker chandelier running on a HLG-120H-24. Flicker non-stop. Added a dummy load resistor – problem solved. (Ugly but worked until I swapped to a smaller driver.)
5. Do I need a special driver for wicker chandeliers with integrated strips?
Not special, but pay attention to form factor. Wicker chandeliers often have limited space inside the base. Mean Well's LPC-60-24 is rectangular but compact (160x98x30mm). The HDR-60-24 is a DIN-rail style, which is longer but slimmer.
If the driver has to sit inside a small balloon chandelier mounting plate, consider the PLP-60-24 (very flat – 24mm height). I once jammed a LRS-150 into a ceiling canopy that was too shallow. Ordered a PLP-60-24 the next day. (Note to self: always check dimensions before ordering.)
6. How do I calculate the right power supply for a custom chandelier?
Most people multiply the strip's watts per meter by the total length, then add 20%. That's the simplified version. But it ignores inrush current and startup surge.
For example: a 24V strip rated 14.4W/m. You use 5 meters. That's 72W. Add 20% = 86.4W. So you'd pick a 100W driver, right? I did that. The driver worked, but after 6 months it tripped the breaker once because the inrush was 4x the rated current.
Mean Well drivers (especially the HLG series) have a built-in inrush limiter, but if you're connecting multiple strips to one driver, the total capacitance adds up. Rule of thumb: aim for 1.3x the calculated load to cover inrush and thermal derating.
7. One more thing you didn't know to ask: Can I mix constant voltage strips with a constant current driver using a resistor?
I see this question in forums all the time. Short answer: don't. It's tempting to think you can use a resistor to convert a constant-current driver (like the MBLU40W) to voltage mode for a strip. But the voltage will drift with temperature, and the strip might overheat.
I tried it once on a wicker chandelier – the strip turned yellow in 3 weeks. That error cost $45 for the strip plus the hassle of re-wiring. Now I keep a checklist on my phone for every custom order: driver type, load calculation, dimming method, physical fit.
