But wait — the RSP-75 is also heavy, around 500g. The actual deep cause was that I hadn't considered mechanical dimensions and mounting method. For a lightweight chandelier, you need a slim, lightweight driver, maybe even a Class 2 power supply like the Mean Well APV-12-24. But that's only 12W. Their design required 60W. So the real problem was thermal management — a 60W driver will always have some bulk. The client needed to either redesign the canopy or accept a slightly larger driver with proper support. I should have flagged this in the design phase.

The Cost

That mistake cost $890 in rework — new canopies, additional shipping, and a one-week delay. The client later told me that the final product looked 'professional' only after they reinforced the canopy and went with a smaller, custom driver. But the brand damage? Their contractor had already posted photos of the sagging canopy on Instagram (ugh). Quality is brand perception. That $890 wasn't just money — it was credibility.

The Monstera Grow Light That Didn't Grow Anything

Surface Problem: The Plant Looked Sad

A few months later (this was September 2023), a different client asked about what watt grow light for Monstera. They were building a small indoor plant setup and wanted a Mean Well LED driver to power a custom COB array. They said, "I need about 100W, right?" I'd read online that Monstera needs around 20-40W per square foot. Their setup was about 3 sq ft. So 100W seemed reasonable. I suggested Mean Well HLG-100H-36B (with 3-in-1 dimming, because why not). They ordered 20 units.

Within two weeks, they reported the plants were leggy, pale, and not thriving. They expected lush growth. Instead, the leaves were small. I was baffled — 100W should be more than enough. Then I measured the output.

Deep Cause: Wattage ≠ Photosynthetic Photon Flux (PPF)

I only believed this after wasting $450 on replacement drivers and a visit to the client's site. Reverse validation: Everyone tells you wattage is a rough proxy for light output for LEDs. I didn't listen. The HLG-100H-36B at full power delivers about 100W. But the COB array they used had a low efficacy — maybe 120 lm/W. In plant terms, you need PPF (μmol/s), not lumens. Their 100W driver combined with cheap 100 lm/W COBs gave maybe 150 μmol/s at the canopy — actually fine for Monstera. But the issue was spectrum: the COB was cool white (5000K), which lacks red light for photosynthesis. They needed a full-spectrum COB with more red (3000K or 3500K). The driver was fine; the light source was wrong.

I'd also not considered dimming: they used the 3-in-1 dimming but didn't configure the resistor correctly. The light was actually running at 70% output. So real power was ~70W. Combined with poor spectrum, the plant got maybe 100 μmol/s — below the 150-200 μmol/s target for Monstera. (Hindsight is 20/20.)

The Cost

After swapping to a Mean Well LPC-60-36 (fixed output) and a high-quality 3000K COB at 60W, the plants perked up in two weeks. But the client had spent $450 on the wrong COBs and wasted two months of growth. They told me they'd never trust a 'generic' recommendation again. That damaged my company's reputation.

What I Learned: The Two-Big-Mistake Checklist

After these incidents, I created a simple pre-order checklist. It's saved me from at least 12 potential errors since early 2024. Here's the short version — because by now you probably see the pattern.

  • For chandeliers and lightweight fixtures: Always check the physical size and weight of the driver. Use slim, low-profile models like Mean Well APV or ELG series where possible. Consider if the driver needs to be mounted remotely.
