When I took over purchasing in 2020, the first complaint I got was about the new lights in the warehouse. Too dim. Not bright enough. Standard stuff — or so I thought. In the lighting world, the difference between a spot and a flood light isn't about wattage—it's about how the light is focused. A spot light typically has a beam angle of 15° to 30°. A flood light spreads out anywhere from 60° to 120° or more.

So when we swapped in a higher-wattage fixture that also happened to have a narrower beam, we made it worse. We concentrated more lumens into a smaller area, which made the dark corners darker by contrast. My guys were standing directly under a 10,000-lumen fixture and still couldn't see what they were doing three feet away from the beam.

The 'brightness' complaint wasn't a brightness issue. It was a distribution issue. What we needed wasn't a stronger light—it was the right kind of spread.

It's tempting to think you can solve every lighting complaint with more wattage. But the math doesn't work that way. Beam angle, height, and distance all interact in ways that a simple lumens-per-watt comparison completely ignores.

The Hidden Cost of Getting This Wrong

The first fix cost us a small fortune: a new fixture, an after-hours install crew, and a week of grumbling from the warehouse team. The second fix—getting the right beam angle—cost a fraction of that and solved the complaint permanently.

But the real cost wasn't the hardware. It was the credibility hit with my internal stakeholders. The warehouse manager was already skeptical of the LED transition. When my "upgrade" didn't fix things, it reinforced the narrative that I didn't understand their needs. That's a relationship problem you can't solve with a purchase order.

A Better Approach: Thinking in Systems

The moment it clicked for me was when I started thinking about the whole system rather than the individual components. A lighting system is the fixture, the driver, the beam optics, and the mounting height. Change one and you change how the others perform.

For example, when we re-spec'd the warehouse, we paired Mean Well drivers with fixtures that had a wider, more even distribution. Retrofit Lessons and the "Grow Light" Confusion

This is also where things get murky with specialized fixtures like Mean Well grow lights.

Grow light drivers are built for constant current, often with specific dimming requirements that match plant growth cycles. But what I see a lot is someone buying a grow light fixture or a driver meant for an LED replacement project, and then wondering why it doesn't light up a parking lot well. Because it wasn't designed for that. It was designed to push light into a canopy, not to spread it across asphalt.

The same logic applies to cordless spotlights and even exterior chandeliers, believe it or not. A cordless spotlight is, by design, a narrow-beam tool. Use it for accent lighting, and it's perfect. Use it for general area lighting, and you'll be disappointed. An exterior chandelier, meanwhile, is usually an aesthetic-fixture—it's there to look good and cast playful shadows, not to function as a security flood light. If you try to force a chandelier to do a flood light's job, you'll hate it, even if the driver—like a Mean Well LRS series power supply—is perfectly reliable.

What I Do Now

Here's the short version of what I learned after five years of managing these projects:

  • Don't just upgrade wattage in isolation. Ask about beam angle and distribution first.
  • Use the spec sheets correctly. A fixture with 15,000 lumens and a 30° beam has about 1,500 candela peak intensity. A fixture with 10,000 lumens and a 90° beam has about 500 candela. The second one will light a room more evenly.
  • Verify the driver compatibility early. Mean Well makes a broad range of LED drivers built for specific voltage/current curves—check that your fixture actually accepts the one you're spec'ing. The LRS-100-5 is a 5V 20A power supply. Someone asked me about it for lighting once, and it took us a moment to remember it's a low-voltage DC supply, not a typical 12V/24V LED driver. Not wrong, just used for the right kind of lights.

The numbers said go with the higher-wattage fixture. My gut said to check the beam spread first. I didn't. Turns out the data on the spec sheet was correct—but I was reading the wrong spec.

The nice part of getting this right is how quiet everything gets. No rework. No complaints. So if you're mid-argument with a stakeholder about brightness, pause before you upgrade the power supply. Ask what the current beam angle is, ask where the complaints are coming from, and ask what the fixture is actually supposed to do. It's a much cheaper conversation than the one that starts with "We just bought new lights and they're still not bright enough."
